All living things are made up of cells. In unicellular organisms, a single cell performs all essential functions. For example, an amoeba can carry out breathing, respiration, ingestion, and excretion on its own.

Multiple tissues combine to form organs, which perform specific functions in the body. For example, the heart, brain, lungs, liver, and kidneys are vital organs in the human body. Groups of organs work together to form organ systems, which ensure the survival and proper functioning of the organism. Most multicellular organisms have several organ systems that maintain life.
