Detailed Solution

Tides

Tides are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun on the Earth. They occur in two forms: high tide and low tide.

  • High tide: The ocean water level rises, covering more land area than usual and appearing closer to the shore.
  • Low tide: The ocean water level falls, exposing more land.
Power generation from tides is intermittent, as it depends on the timing of high and low tides.

Waves

Waves are disturbances in ocean water created mainly by strong winds or by the pressure caused by large ships. The movement of wind and water generates wave energy. Unlike tides, wave-based power generation is continuous, since water movement in the reservoir persists as long as the wind flows.
