Detailed Solution

Xylem and phloem are the two types of vascular (transport) tissue in plants, but they have distinct functions, structures, and components. They form the plant's "plumbing" system.

Xylem

  • Function: Conducts water and dissolved minerals from the roots up to the rest of the plant (leaves, stems, flowers).
  • Direction of Flow: Unidirectional (one-way traffic), from roots to leaves.
  • Primary Cell Types: Tracheids and vessel elements.
  • Cell Status: The conducting cells are dead at functional maturity. They are hollow, empty tubes.
  • Structural Support: The cells have thick, rigid cell walls reinforced with lignin, which provides structural support to the plant (this is what wood is made of).

Phloem

  • Function: Transports sugars (primarily sucrose), produced during photosynthesis, from the leaves (the "source") to other parts of the plant that need energy (the "sink"), such as roots, fruits, or growing tips.
  • Direction of Flow: Bidirectional (two-way traffic). It can move sugars up or down the plant depending on where the source and sink are.
  • Primary Cell Types: Sieve-tube elements and companion cells.
  • Cell Status: The conducting cells (sieve tubes) are living at functional maturity, but they lack a nucleus and other major organelles to maximize flow. They are supported by an adjacent companion cell.
  • Structural Support: Phloem cells have thinner walls and provide no significant structural support.
