Concept- Calgon is a market name for  a complex compound with six phosphate ions forming a ring surrounded by sodium ions. Its chemical name is sodium hexametaphosphate.
Calgon is used to soften hard water.
In this process, Calgon ionises in water to form the complex anion and Na+ions.
Mg2+and Ca2+ ions present in hard water displaces Na+ion from the complex anion and forms a soluble complex compound.
This results in the removal of calcium and magnesium ions from hard water in the form of a complex formed with calgon
