Concept- A homologous series is a series of compounds with similar chemical properties and some functional groups different from the subsequent CH2 member.
For example-Alkanes of the general formula CnH2n+2, alkenes of the general formula CnH2n and alkynes of the general formula CnH2n-2 form the most basic homologous series in organic chemistry.
Now, alcohol series is also one of the homologous series and its general formula is CnH2n+2O
Therefore, the first member of the alcohol series is CH4O . It can also be written as CH3OH.
To determine the fourth member of this series, we can simply put n = 4 in the general formula. Thus, the chemical formula of fourth member of the alcohol series is-
C4H10O or CH3CH2CH2CH2OH.
