Detailed Solution

The full form of CFC is Chlorofluorocarbon.

This name indicates the chemical composition of the molecule, which is made up of Chlorine (Cl), Fluorine (F), and Carbon (C) atoms.

Is CFC harmful to humans?

Directly, CFCs are not very harmful to humans at low levels of exposure. They are considered largely non-toxic and non-irritating. However, inhaling very high concentrations of CFCs, especially in a confined space, can be dangerous and may cause:

  • Dizziness and lightheadedness
  • Loss of coordination
  • Headaches
  • In extreme cases, heart palpitations or loss of consciousness due to oxygen displacement.

The primary harm of CFCs is indirect but far more significant: their devastating effect on the Earth's ozone layer. When released, stable CFC molecules rise to the stratosphere, where UV radiation breaks them down, releasing chlorine atoms. A single chlorine atom can destroy thousands of ozone molecules, leading to the depletion of the ozone layer, which protects us from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation.
