Detailed Solution

The full form of DPT is Diphtheria, Pertussis, and Tetanus.

What is DPT?

DPT is a combined vaccine given to children to protect them from three serious and potentially deadly diseases: diphtheria, whooping cough (pertussis), and tetanus. This vaccine is usually given in multiple doses during early childhood as part of the universal immunization program in many countries, including India.

The Three Diseases in DPT

  1. Diphtheria:
    • A bacterial infection caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae.
    • Affects the throat and airways.
    • Can cause difficulty in breathing, heart problems, and even death if untreated.
  2. Pertussis (Whooping Cough):
    • A bacterial infection caused by Bordetella pertussis.
    • Leads to severe coughing fits with a “whooping” sound when the child breathes in.
    • Can last for weeks and may cause pneumonia or brain damage in infants.
  3. Tetanus:
    • Caused by Clostridium tetani, found in soil, dust, or animal waste.
    • Enters the body through cuts or wounds.
    • Produces toxins that cause painful muscle stiffness and spasms, often called “lockjaw.”

How the DPT Vaccine Works

The DPT vaccine contains weakened or killed parts of the bacteria that cause these diseases. They cannot cause the disease but stimulate the body’s immune system to produce antibodies. This prepares the immune system to fight off the real infections in the future.

Doses of DPT Vaccine

  • The first dose is given at 6 weeks of age.
  • The second dose at 10 weeks.
  • The third dose at 14 weeks.
  • A booster dose at 16–24 months.
  • Another booster at 4–6 years.

Importance of DPT

  • Saves millions of children from life-threatening diseases.
  • Reduces childhood mortality rates.
  • Forms part of the essential vaccines recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Conclusion: The full form of DPT is Diphtheria, Pertussis, and Tetanus. The DPT vaccine protects children from these three dangerous diseases and plays a major role in public health worldwide.
