Detailed Solution

Natural Killer (NK) cells are a type of lymphocytes that play a crucial role in the innate immune response. They are called natural killers because they can kill virus-infected cells or cancerous cells without the need of specific recognition. Once they bind to target cells, NK cells produce perforins that punch holes in the membrane of the target cell and granzymes, which can directly enter the target cells and cause them to self-destruct. Additionally, NK cells also produce cytokines, such as alpha interferons, which recruit other immune cells to the site of infection or cancer.
