The cytoskeleton is a network of protein fibres found within the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells that provides structural support and helps to maintain the shape of the cell. The cytoskeleton is also responsible for facilitating cell movement. In many cells, microfilaments and microtubules work together to produce movements, such as the movement of cilia or flagella, or the crawling of cells along a surface. Additionally, the cytoskeleton plays an important role in cell division. Microtubules, in particular, are involved in the assembly and separation of chromosomes during mitosis and meiosis.
