Detailed Solution

French is the language spoken by the people residing in the Flemish region of Belgium. Belgium's ethnic makeup is quite diverse. The Flemish region has 59 per cent of the country's overall population and speaks Dutch. Wallonia has another 40% of the population that speaks French. The remaining 1% of Belgians are fluent in German. In Brussels, the capital city, 80 per cent of residents speak French, while 20 per cent speak Dutch. The minority French-speaking community was prosperous and powerful. This was loathed by the Dutch-speaking community, which profited from economic prosperity and education as a result. This caused tensions between the Dutch-speaking and French-speaking communities in the 1950s and 1960s. The Dutch-speaking population was a majority across the country but a minority in Brussels.
