Detailed Solution

German is the language spoken by the remaining one per cent of the Belgians. Belgium's ethnic composition is fairly diversified. The Flemish region, which speaks Dutch, comprises 59 per cent of the country's total population. Another 40% of the population in Wallonia is fluent in French. The remaining 1% of Belgians speak German fluently. In the capital city of Brussels, 80 per cent of citizens speak French, while 20 per cent speak Dutch. The French-speaking minority community was rich and influential. The Dutch-speaking community, which benefited from economic prosperity and education, as a result, despised this. In the 1950s and 1960s, this created conflicts between the Dutch-speaking and French-speaking communities. The Dutch-speaking population was the majority throughout the country, but it was a minority in Brussels.
