The large intestine is the final segment of the digestive tract and measures about 1.5 metres (5 feet) in length.

Its primary function is to absorb water and electrolytes from indigestible material and form faeces, which are then eliminated from the body via the rectum and anus.

The large intestine is divided into four segments: the cecum, colon, rectum, and anal canal.

The mucosal layer that lines the large intestine contains many tiny finger-like projections called villi and microvilli that aid in the absorption of water and electrolytes.

It also supports a large population of gut bacteria, which contribute to good health by fermenting undigested carbohydrates.

These bacteria also help to maintain the balance of the gut microbiome or gut flora (the bacteria, archaea, fungi, and viruses that inhabit an animal's digestive system are referred to as gut flora) and support the digestive system and overall health.
