The literacy rate for men was higher than for women. It was around 84.7% for men and 70.3% for women. The literacy rate was also higher in urban areas than in rural areas. It was 87.7% in urban areas and 73.5% in rural areas. Kerala has the highest literacy rate in the country, followed by Lakshadweep and Mizoram.
