Bacterial respiration is the process by which bacteria convert nutrients into energy. In bacteria, the mesosome is the site of respiration. Mesosomes are invaginations of the plasma membrane that extend into the cytoplasm and are involved in many cellular functions, including aerobic respiration. The mesosome provides a large surface area for the attachment of respiratory enzymes and electron transport chains, which are involved in the production of ATP through oxidative phosphorylation.
