What is the main component of bacterial cell walls?

 

Bacterial cell walls are primarily composed of peptidoglycan, a polymer of sugars and amino acids. This gives the cell wall its rigidity and provides protection to the cell. Other organisms, such as fungi and plants, have different types of cell walls made of different components such as chitin and cellulose. Animals, however, lack a cell wall entirely.
