Detailed Solution

The main function of a vacuole is storage and maintaining turgor pressure in plant cells. Plant cells have a large central vacuole filled with cell sap (water, ions, sugars, pigments, and waste). By drawing in water, the vacuole creates turgor pressure against the cell wall. This pressure keeps the plant firm and upright. In addition, vacuoles store nutrients, detoxify harmful substances, and help in recycling cell components through autophagy-like processes.

Functions list

  • Turgor maintenance: Supports mechanical strength of herbaceous plants.
  • Storage: Ions, sugars, amino acids, pigments (e.g., anthocyanins), and waste products.
  • pH and ion balance: Helps regulate cytoplasmic homeostasis.
  • Defense: Stores secondary metabolites that deter herbivores.
  • Growth: Cell expansion by vacuolar enlargement.
