Detailed Solution

  • Rutherford’s model could not explain why atoms are stable.
  • In his model, electrons move around the nucleus like tiny planets.
  • Physics says a moving charged particle (like an orbiting electron) should lose energy by giving off electromagnetic radiation.
  • If electrons keep losing energy, they would spiral into the nucleus and the atom would collapse.
  • But in real life, atoms do not collapse. They are stable. So Rutherford’s model didn’t match reality.

How this was fixed (Bohr’s idea):

  • Electrons can sit only in fixed energy levels (orbits).
  • While in these allowed orbits, electrons do not radiate energy.
  • They jump between levels by absorbing or releasing set amounts of energy.
  • This explains atomic stability.
