When a light ray passes from an optically denser medium to a rarer medium and is incident at an angle greater than the critical angle of the medium, the ray completely reflects back into the medium. This is known as complete internal reflection.

The angle of incidence must have been greater than the critical angle for this type of media combination throughout the denser medium.
A light ray may travel from a denser to a rarer medium.
The critical angle is the angle of incidence in a denser medium at which the angle of refraction inside a rarer medium approach 90°.
