Romantic poets and artists typically criticised the worship of logic and science in favour of emphasising feelings, intuition, and mysticism. To build a nation, they sought to instil a sense of a common cultural past and shared national heritage. Romantics like the German philosopher Johann Gottfried Herder asserted that the Volk, or ordinary people, were where authentic German culture could be found. The original spirit of the country (volksgeist) was popularised through folk music, poetry, and dance. Local dialects were emphasised to reach vast, largely illiterate audiences with the new nationalist message.
