The meaning of the word ‘Eelam’ is state
Sri Lanka emerged as an independent country in 1948. The Sinhalese and Sri Lankan Tamils constitute Sri Lanka's two largest ethnic groups. Sinhalese dominate government of newly independent Sri Lanka took a variety of majoritarian actions to ascertain Sinhalese dominance. In 1956, Sinhala was recognised as Sri Lanka's official language. The governments followed preferential policies that favoured Sinhala candidates for university positions and government jobs. This led to the demand for a separate state i.e. eelam since the Tamils were made to feel alienated and their demands for respect of their language and culture as well as demand for regional autonomy was not heeded. Therefore, the Sri Lankan Tamils began demanding Tamil Eelam.
