The coastal settlement where ships unloaded goods from distant land was known as Arikamedu.
The coastal settlement of the Arikamedu was found near Puducherry. This coastal settlement was also a trade centre. A massive brick structure which may have been a warehouse was also found at this site. Other pieces of evidence found on the site are the pottery of the Mediterranean region and stamp-glazed pottery. There are also shreds of evidence of locally made pottery with Roman designs found. Indicating that goods were unloaded from Rome as well on this coastal settlement.
