Harshavardhana was the ruler of Kanauj, who was credited for performing the Ashvamedha sacrifice several times. Harshavardhana was his father's eldest son, after his father's death, his brother became the king of Thanesar. He later took over the kingdom of Kanauj after the death of his brother-in-law, who was the ruler of Bengal. He also led an expedition towards the Deccan, but the ruler of the Chalukya dynasty stopped him.
