If magnification has a negative value, then the image formed is real and inverted.
It is known that the magnification (m) produced is the ratio of the image distance (v) to the object distance (u). It can also be defined as the ratio of the image height (h') to the object height (h). Mathematically,
 m=vu=h'h
Now, if the image is formed at the other side of the object, then the image distance is positive, and the object distance is negative, and when the image distance is positive, a real and inverted image is formed. Hence, the negative magnification represents a real and inverted image.
