Blood platelets, also known as thrombocytes, are small, colorless cell fragments found in the blood that are essential for normal blood clotting. 

The normal platelet count range for a healthy adult is generally considered to be between 50,000 and 150,000 per microliter of blood. Platelets are a type of blood cell that is involved in the blood clotting process. 

Abnormalities in platelet function or number can lead to bleeding disorders, such as thrombocytopenia (reduced platelet count) or thrombocytopathy (abnormal platelet function), which can increase the risk of bleeding or bruising. Conversely, high platelet counts, known as thrombocytosis, can increase the risk of abnormal blood clots, which can cause serious medical problems such as deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, or stroke.
