Detailed Solution

When an active metal reacts with water, it forms a metal hydroxide and releases hydrogen gas.

Active metals such as sodium, potassium, and calcium react vigorously with water. The general chemical reaction is:

Metal + Water → Metal Hydroxide + Hydrogen Gas

ExampleEquation
Sodium (Na)2Na + 2H₂O → 2NaOH + H₂
Calcium (Ca)Ca + 2H₂O → Ca(OH)₂ + H₂
Potassium (K)2K + 2H₂O → 2KOH + H₂

The reaction releases heat and hydrogen gas, which may catch fire if not handled safely. Less reactive metals like magnesium react slowly, and very unreactive ones like copper do not react at all. This reaction helps understand the reactivity series of metals.
