Carbon is not being used for the reduction of aluminium from aluminium oxide because carbon can not reduce alumina to aluminium.
Aluminium is a reactive metal and carbon is a non metal. The reason for carbon not being used in the reduction of aluminium from aluminium oxide is that aluminium has a greater affinity for oxygen than that for a carbon and also carbon cannot reduce alumina to aluminium. This is the reason why carbon is not used in the reduction.
