Detailed Solution

The relation between mass and weight is Weight = Mass × Gravitational Acceleration (W = m × g).

Mass is the amount of matter in a body, while weight is the force with which Earth attracts that body toward its center. Weight depends on gravity, but mass remains the same everywhere.

Formula

W = m × g

  • W = Weight (in Newtons)
  • m = Mass (in kilograms)
  • g = Acceleration due to gravity (9.8 m/s² on Earth)

Example

If an object has a mass of 10 kg:

Weight = 10 × 9.8 = 98 N

Difference Between Mass and Weight

Scalar quantityVector quantity

On the Moon, where gravity is one-sixth of Earth’s, an object’s weight reduces, but its mass stays the same.
