A DNA probe is a single-stranded sequence of DNA or RNA that is used in molecular biology to detect the presence of a complementary nucleotide sequence in a sample by binding to it through a process called hybridization.
The role of a DNA probe is akin to a molecular "search-and-find" tool. It is a short segment of DNA, typically 15 to 100 base pairs long, that has been labeled with a radioactive isotope or a fluorescent dye. This label allows the probe to be easily detected.

The labeled DNA probe is then added to the sample. If the probe finds a sequence that is a perfect match (or very close to it), it will bind, or hybridize, to that sequence.
The excess, unbound probes are then washed away. The location of the probe can then be detected by the signal from its label. For example, if it's a radioactive label, its location can be seen on an X-ray film; if it's a fluorescent dye, its location can be seen under a special light. This simple yet powerful mechanism allows DNA probes to be used in a wide array of applications in medicine, forensics, and research.

- Detecting Pathogens: DNA probes can be designed to detect the unique DNA or RNA of viruses (like HIV) or bacteria, providing a fast and accurate way to diagnose infectious diseases.
- Research: In laboratories, probes are used in techniques like Southern blotting and in situ hybridization to study gene expression and the location of genes within tissues.
