Detailed Solution

The complement system is a group of proteins that work together to enhance the activity of the innate immune system. The complement system causes cytolysis, opsonisation and activate inflammation.
Cytolysis: When an infection occurs, the complement system is activated and produces a cascade of reactions that lead to the formation of the membrane attack complex (MAC). This complex is composed of several complement proteins, and it forms a hole in the membrane of the pathogen, which leads to the destruction of the pathogen.
Opsonisation: Opsonisation is the process by which antibodies or complement proteins (C3b) coat the surface of a foreign invader, such as bacteria or viruses, to enhance phagocytosis by promoting adherence.
