Detailed Solution

When an allergen is encountered by the body for the first time, it triggers the production of IgE antibodies specific to that allergen. The IgE antibodies produced by plasma cells (B lymphocytes) then bind to mast cells in the tissues. On subsequent exposure to the same allergen, the allergen binds to the IgE antibodies on the mast cells, causing the mast cells to release histamine and other mediators of inflammation. These mediators cause the symptoms of an allergic reaction, such as itching, redness, swelling, and increased production of mucus.
