Emmanuel Joseph Sieyes, a well-known Roman Catholic priest and passionate supporter of the French Revolution wrote under the pen name Abbe Sieyes. Abbe Sieyes, a former priest, wrote the famous pamphlet 'What is the Third Estate?'. In addition, this widely read pamphlet helped the National Assembly evolve from the Estates-General into one of the critical documents of the Revolution. On June 20, Mirabeau and Abbé Sieyès led the members of the third estate who had gathered in the hall of an indoor tennis court in the gardens of Versailles. The French constitution that would limit the monarch's power was advocated for by the Third Estate, which constituted themselves as a National Assembly.
