The time lag between Gujarat and Arunachal Pradesh is 2 hours. India extends from Gujarat in the west to Arunachal Pradesh in the north, over 29° longitude. With every 15° change in longitude, there is a difference of one hour in time. So, this longitudinal extent of India results in around two hours’ difference in time between the east and the west. The sun rises and sets earlier on the easterly side of the island than on the western side by two hours. There is a possibility of two time zones in India due to this difference. But, to avoid confusion, the Indian Standard Time (IST) is followed all over India, ignoring the time lag.
