The trend of coalition parties has been witnessed since the 1991 elections. Over the decades post-independence, the number of parties expanded. Not a single National Party could secure a majority in the Lok Sabha until 2014 and after 1989 somewhat, when the Congress started losing its influence. As a result, the national parties started forming alliances with the State Parties. Since 1996, nearly every state party has had an opportunity to be a part of one or the other national-level coalition government. A coalition is an alliance between two or more political parties when no party secures a majority in the elections. This very idea of making alliances between the National and the State parties has contributed to strengthening the ideals of Federalism in our country.
