Detailed Solution

A hemisphere is exactly half of a sphere, divided by a plane passing through its center. The volume of a hemisphere measures the amount of space enclosed within this half-sphere. It is expressed in cubic units (cm³, m³, etc.).

Formula for Volume of a Hemisphere

The volume (V) of a hemisphere is derived from the volume of a sphere:

Volume of Sphere = (4/3) × π × r³

Since a hemisphere is half of a sphere:

Volume of Hemisphere = (2/3) × π × r³

Where:

  • r = radius of the hemisphere
  • π (pi) ≈ 3.14159

Example: If the radius of a hemisphere is 7 cm, its volume is:

V = (2/3) × π × 7³ = (2/3) × 3.1416 × 343 = 718.4 cm³ (approx.)

Answer: The hemisphere holds approximately 718.4 cubic centimeters of space.
