What is the Waqf Bill?

The Waqf Bill, often referred to as the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, is legislation aimed at updating and reforming the management of Waqf properties in India. “Waqf” refers to properties or assets donated for religious, educational, or charitable purposes under Islamic law. Over the years, many waqf properties were mismanaged or lacked transparency in records. 

The bill seeks to introduce digital registration, modern administrative oversight, and clear governance structures to ensure better accountability. It aims to prevent misuse or illegal occupation of waqf assets while balancing religious autonomy and state regulation. 

Proponents argue that it brings modernization and clarity to an outdated system, while critics fear it could increase government control over community endowments. The goal is to improve transparency, efficiency, and equitable use of religious charitable assets for public benefit.
