Detailed Solution

Photosystem II absorbs light primarily in the red and blue regions of the electromagnetic spectrum, corresponding to shorter wavelengths(680 nm as compared to 700 nm that is absorbed by PS II). This energy is used to excite electrons in the chlorophyll pigments within the photosystem.

In the process of photosynthesis, water molecules are split within the thylakoid membrane of the chloroplasts. This splitting of water releases electrons, protons, and oxygen. The electrons are then utilized by Photosystem II to replace the excited electrons that are sent through the electron transport chain, ensuring a continuous flow of electrons to generate energy carriers.
