Detailed Solution

The first artificial recombinant DNA molecule was constructed by Cohen and Boyer. For this process the vector (plasmid) was obtained from Salmonella typhimurium. Plasmid DNA was used as vector. Stanley Cohen and Herbert Boyer accomplished this in 1972 by isolating the antibiotic resistance gene by cutting out a piece of DNA from a plasmid which was responsible for conferring antibiotic resistance. Linking of antibiotic resistance gene with the vector become possible with the enzyme DNA ligase. Host cell in which the recombinant DNA was inserted is Escherichia coli.
