The issue that the Sepoys experienced with the new cartridges that they were instructed to use was that it interfered with their religious beliefs.
After the passing of a young soldier named Mangal Pandey, some sepoys in the regiment at Meerut refused to finish the army drill using the new cartridges.
The sepoys objected to using new cartridges for the reasons listed below when told to do so:
1)      To lube, the cartridges for brand-new firearms, cow, and pig fat were used. The Hindus and Muslims who reside in the Indian colonial regions find this to be a grave insult.
2)      The Indian soldiers claimed that the English had introduced the cartridge to achieve their primary objective of converting all of the sepoys to Christianity and that it would characterise both Mohammedans and Hindus.
3)      The main justification for their opposition to using the new cartridges was that their religious convictions were compromised. They thought the British were trying to disparage their religion.
4)      The sepoys had to use their tongues to take off the covers from the cartridges.
