What kind of plants generally constitute the understorey layer in a forest?

In a forest, crowns of trees form canopies. As the size of the trees vary, the  type and size of crowns also vary. This creates different horizontal layers in the forest known as understoreys. 

Giant and tall trees constitute the top layer of the canopy while the medium or small trees form the understoreys.
