Mahatma Gandhi started the Rowlatt Satyagraha against the Rowlatt Act. The Indians opposed the Rowlatt Act, and a nationwide satyagraha was started in 1919 by Mahatma Gandhi. The Act granted the government broad authority to stifle political activity and permitted the two-year imprisonment of political prisoners without a trial. Indians strongly opposed the Rowlatt Act; Indian leaders, social revolutionaries, and even the general public strongly disapproved of it. Numerous cities organised rallies, and employees at railway workshops went on strike.
