Detailed Solution

The name Harijans was the Dalits referred to by Gandhiji.
In Indian society, caste and class divisions exist. Gandhi considered untouchability to be a sin and advocated its abolition. He identified Dalits as Harijans or God's offspring. He conducted satyagraha to end untouchability and secure a place for Dalits in Indian society. He cleaned the toilet to dignify the work of the bhangis. He led a satyagraha in favour of untouchables to secure temple entry, access to public wells, schools, etc. He believed that swaraj would not come for a hundred years if the sin of untouchability was not abolished. But he was opposed to the idea of a separate electorate for Dalits. He provided reserved seats in favour of Dalits in the legislature and educational institutes.
