What observation supported evolution by natural selection in England?

There were more dark-winged moths than white-winged moths after industrialisation. The observation that the proportion of dark-winged or melanised moths increased after industrialisation in England supported evolution by natural selection. Predators could spot moths against a contrasting background, and the dark-winged moths were better camouflaged against the dark tree trunks, caused by industrial smoke and soot. This led to the survival and increase in population size of the dark-winged moths. The fact that the count of melanic moths was low in rural areas without industrialisation further supported this understanding that those that can better adapt survive and increase in population size.
