Detailed Solution

The percentage of people were poor in India in 2011 was 21.9.
The poverty line may differ with place and time. Every nation uses an imaginary line considered appropriate for its current level of growth and its accepted minimum social norms and beliefs. There is a substantial fall in poverty proportions in India from about 45 per cent in 1993-94 to around 37.2 per cent in 2004–05. The ratio of people who are below the poverty line further marked a downfall to about 22 per cent in 2011–12. If the trend continues in the same way, the proportion of people below the poverty line may reduce to less than 20 per cent in the upcoming years.
