What prevents a substance from sinking in water?

The upward force applied to an object that is fully or partially submerged in a fluid is known as the buoyant force. Upthrust is another name for this upward thrust. The density of the fluid, the volume of the fluid displaced, and the local acceleration due to gravity are three elements that determine buoyant force. A substance that has a density greater than the liquid it is submerged in has a tendency to sink.
