Detailed Solution

The problems faced in transporting food over long distances till the 1870s were that animals were shipped and slaughtered at their destination; in the long journey, animals died, fell ill and lost weight; high prices kept the demand and production down. Throughout the decade, animals were shipped live from America to Europe and slaughtered after they arrived there. However, live animals took up tons of ship houses. Some died on the voyage, fell ill, lost weight, or became unfit to eat. As a result, meat became equal to luxury for poor Europeans.
