Detailed Solution

The processes used to separate a substance that is soluble in water are sedimentation, decantation and evaporation.
A mixture in which one substance is insoluble and the other is soluble in water can be separated using three methods that are decantation, sedimentation and evaporation. The insoluble substance will not dissolve in water and can be separated by either sedimentation or filtration. If the insoluble substance is heavier than water, then it will settle down at the bottom of the container, and the clear liquid with the soluble substance dissolved in it will rise up. So, by the process of sedimentation or decantation, we can separate the insoluble substance in a mixture. If the insoluble substance is lighter than water, then it will float on the surface of the water. Any insoluble solid can be separated from a liquid using any filtering device, such as filter paper, and this process is called filtration. In this process, the insoluble solid is left in the filtering device, and the water with a soluble substance in it will pass through the filtering device. So, by the process of filtration, we can separate the insoluble substance in a mixture. The water with the soluble substance obtained can be converted into its vapours by the process of evaporation. The water will evaporate, leaving behind the soluble substance of the mixture.
