Formation of State Election Commission and reservation of seats for SCs, STs and OBCs are provisions made by the government to strengthen the local self governments in India.
Several provisions have been put in place by the government in order to strengthen the third tier of the government in India. They have been provided with constitutional status, which gives them a lot of legitimacy. The establishment of State Election Commissions means that the elections for these local bodies are to be held regularly without any influence from the state government. Seats have been reserved for marginalised groups such as SCs, STs, OBCs and women. This provides better representation for their issues. However, these local bodies still face the issue of lack of financial resources as adequate funds are not transferred by the respective governments.
