Women had an active role in the events that led to many significant changes in French society right from the start. They hoped that getting involved would put pressure on the revolutionary government to enact policies that would improve their lives. Female political equality with male political equality was one of the critical objectives. Women were dissatisfied with how passive their status as citizens was under the Constitution of 1791. They wanted the ability to cast ballots, be chosen for the Assembly, and occupy the elected office. They believed that only then would their interests be taken into account by the new administration. Throughout the following 200 years, women's movements for equal pay and voting rights persisted worldwide.
