What risks and limitations exist for stem cell treatments?

While stem cells offer great promise, their use comes with important risks and challenges. The biggest concern is uncontrolled growth. If stem cells multiply or differentiate improperly, they can form tumors or unwanted tissue. This risk is higher with pluripotent stem cells, which can become any cell type. That’s why strict lab testing and clinical controls are essential before using them in patients.

Another issue is immune rejection. Transplanted stem cells from donors may be recognized as foreign by the recipient’s immune system, leading to rejection or inflammation. Using a patient’s own cells can reduce this, but it is often expensive and time-consuming.

There are also ethical and regulatory concerns, especially with embryonic stem cells, which come from early-stage embryos. Many countries enforce strict rules about how these cells can be obtained and used.
