The shape is your eye lens when you look at your hand, and a distant tree will be thick (more convex) and thin (less convex).
So, in order to focus nearer or farther object, the lens needs to change its shape, i.e. When we will look at our hand, the distance between the hand and eye lens is less, so in order to focus its image on the retina screen, the ciliary muscles will be relaxed which causes the lens to be thick and decrease in its focal length.
When we look at a distance tree, the distance between the tree and our eye lens is more, so in order to focus its image on the retina screen, the ciliary muscles will be contracted, which causes the lens to be stretched, i.e. thin and increase in its focal length.
